Minor Earth Tremor Reported in Sri Lanka – No Major Damage or Casualties

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (News Cutter) – Several areas in Sri Lanka reported a minor tremor today, March 30.

The Sri Lanka Geological Survey and Mines Bureau confirmed that the tremor took place.

According to SLGS, the tremor which registered 3.7 on the Richter scale, originated within seas 37 km off the coast of Beruwala, Kalutara District at 13:02 p.m.

A resident of Beruwala also confirmed to News Cutter that they felt the tremor at around 1 p.m. today. No major damage or casualties have been reported so far.

Similarly, on March 19 and February 11, a minor earth tremor of 3.0 and 2.3 magnitudes occurred in the Trincomalee and Buttala.

Sri Lanka is located on the boundary of two tectonic plates. According to experts, tremors and earthquakes are not uncommon in the region. However, most of these events are minor and do not result in significant damage or harm. (LAHIRU DOLOSWALA)
