Controversy Erupts at Colombo Airport Over Visa Issuance by Indian Company

Chaos engulfed the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) last night in the wake of a contentious transition of the on-arrival visa issuance process to an Indian company. The move, which saw the Indian firm assuming control of the visa issuance process, drew ire from travelers and officials alike.

For years, the Immigration and Emigration Department had efficiently managed the visa issuance process. However, the recent takeover by the Indian company introduced an additional $25 charge, sparking outrage among passengers. If the Government was to achieve its target of attracting 2.4 million tourists per annum, then the Indian company would be able to generate a revenue of USD 60 Million.

Questions swirled regarding the legality of the transition, with concerns raised over the lack of cabinet approval for the company’s assumption of control. Many questioned which authority sanctioned this move without proper authorization.

In addition to the unexpected takeover, travelers were dismayed to find themselves facing long queues and delays at the airport. Videos circulated on social media captured the frustration of passengers, with one individual vocally expressing his dissatisfaction.

The individual, identified as a Sri Lankan citizen, vehemently objected to the involvement of Indian personnel in determining visa statuses. He argued for his rights as a taxpayer and demanded accountability from the government for outsourcing such a critical service to a foreign entity.

Furthermore, the individual criticized the employment of foreign workers over local labor, highlighting a broader concern regarding the prioritization of international companies over domestic interests.

Reports emerged of foreigners enduring extensive wait times of up to several hours to obtain their visas, further exacerbating the chaotic scene at the airport.
