In a significant address at the United National Party’s (UNP) May Day rally in Colombo, President Ranil Wickremesinghe called upon political parties, including the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and Janatha Vimukti Peramuna (JVP), to unite in support of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) agreement for the nation’s economic stability.
With the theme of “A proud Nation that will never fall again,” the May Day rally witnessed a notable turnout from party members across the island, showcasing a diverse political landscape. Among the attendees was Dr. Gayashan Navanandana, a Member of Parliament representing the Monaragala District and affiliated with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), who expressed support for the UNP.
President Wickremesinghe emphasized the imperative of safeguarding the IMF program, highlighting the risk of regressing to the economic situation of 2022 if traditional political stances interfere with the agreement’s success.
Addressing the gathering, President Wickremesinghe reiterated the UNP’s role in revitalizing the economy, despite previous doubts about the party’s viability. He underscored the historical resilience of the UNP in overcoming challenges and steering the nation towards progress.
The President acknowledged the vibrant democracy exhibited through May Day rallies nationwide, noting the participation of various political parties and ideologies. Despite challenges and opposition, he emphasized the government’s commitment to forging ahead for the nation’s benefit.
In outlining the country’s economic achievements, the President pointed to the strengthening of the rupee, increased tourism, and agricultural success. He acknowledged the challenges faced and tough decisions made to stabilize the economy, urging collaboration across party lines to maintain progress.
