COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (News Cutter)—The Department of Prisons raises concerns over the alarming overcrowding in prisons nationwide, attributing the issue to a rapid increase in the number of individuals imprisoned this year. 

With a total capacity of 13,241, prisons currently hold approximately 29,000 individuals, including 10,000 convicts and 19,000 detainees. 
The situation demands urgent attention as the number of inmates, both sentenced and in remand custody, continues to rise steadily.
