Speaking at a presser, Member of Parliament Charitha Herath says the year 2023 should allow for space by way of elections to overcome the many anti-democratic acts that have taken place in the year 2022.
He went on to state that it was necessary to determine the people’s opinion this year and that by postponing the polls, the country is headed toward a big disaster, bringing the democratic system into question.
Mr Herath said there is an opinion that it is useless for a party not in power to win local government bodies. If that was the case, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna would not have won even one local government body in 2018. He added that 2023 is a year of major political change.
Opining about an increase in electricity tariffs, he said the Public Utilities Act is very important and that the Public Utilities Commission cannot be ignored. The Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission Janaka Ratnayake has openly challenged the decision to increase the electricity tariffs.
Mr Herath said it would be wrong to burden the people of the country with an even bigger electricity bill, while they could not afford the present one.
