The Sri Lankan Health Ministry has announced a notable influx of doctors returning to the country after previously departing for various reasons. This welcome development offers hope for alleviating the persistent shortage of medical professionals in the nation’s healthcare system.
Speaking at a recent news briefing, Deputy Director General (Medical Services) Dr. G. Wijesuriya underscored the significance of this positive trend, highlighting a noticeable decrease in the number of doctors opting to leave the country in recent times.
“Previously, there was a troubling pattern of doctors, especially those pursuing postgraduate training abroad, choosing not to return to Sri Lanka. However, we are now witnessing a reversal of this trend, with an increasing number of doctors opting to come back,” remarked Dr. Wijesuriya.
The Health Ministry has emphasized the importance of addressing the longstanding issue of doctor shortages comprehensively.
