Growing Trend of MPs Exploiting Parliamentary Privileges Threatens Judicial Independence, Says BASL

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (News Cutter) –The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has expressed concern over a growing trend among members of parliament who are exploiting parliamentary privileges to make statements on matters that are currently being considered by a court.

According to the BASL, this exploitation undermines the judiciary and the social fabric of the country. The association strongly believes that the judiciary should operate independently without external pressures or interference in order to maintain a vibrant democracy.

The BASL emphasizes that it is the responsibility of both the government and the Opposition to respect and uphold the independence of the judiciary, condemning any interference in the judicial process as it sets a dangerous precedent.
