Gajendrakuma Ponnambalam, leader of the Tamil National People’s Front (TNPF), part of the All-Ceylon Tamil Congress (ACTC) urged India to support the establishment of a ‘Federal Constitution’ in Sri Lanka as a solution to the ‘National Problem’.
In a letter addressed to Indian Minister of External Affairs S. Jaishankar, Ponnambalam states that the main cause behind the ethnic problem in Sri Lanka was the ‘Unitary State Structure’.
Furthermore, he states that Sri Lanka’s Tamil population have objected the 13th Amendment ever since its introduction as it still acknowledges the existence of the ‘Unitary State’.
Moreover, he states that no meaningful autonomy or self-governing can be established with as long as the ‘Unitary State’ exists.
Ponnambalam urged the Government of India (GOI) to use the leverage it has over Sri Lanka to support the right self determination of ethnic Sri Lankan Tamils to create what he calls the “Tamil Nation”.
