Sri Lanka’s dengue crisis continues to escalate, with the total number of cases recorded in 2023 surpassing 73,000. This staggering figure, as reported by the Epidemiology Unit, highlights the severity of the situation and the urgent need for effective prevention and control measures.
As of November 19, 2023, the cumulative number of dengue cases has reached 73,032. The Colombo district is the worst affected, accounting for a staggering 15,509 cases. This is followed by the Western Province, which has recorded a total of 34,700 cases. Notably, the month of November alone has witnessed 4,539 dengue cases, indicating the persistent spread of the disease.
Health officials attribute the surge in dengue cases to the ongoing rainy season, which creates favorable breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes, the primary vectors of dengue fever. In light of this situation, they are urging the public to take proactive measures to prevent and control the spread of dengue.
These measures include:
- Eliminating potential mosquito breeding sites by removing stagnant water from containers, flower pots, and discarded tires.
- Maintaining a clean environment by disposing of garbage properly and keeping surroundings free from clutter.
- Using mosquito repellents and wearing long-sleeved clothing and pants, especially during dawn and dusk.
- Protecting oneself with mosquito nets while sleeping.
