Sri Lanka Rejects Canada’s Reference to ‘Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day’, Calls for Unity and Cooperation

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (News Cutter) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Sri Lanka has expressed its strong rejection of the reference to a ‘Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day’ made in a statement issued by the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, on July 23.

The MFA stated that Canada’s continued use of this false and distorted narrative of the past conflict in Sri Lanka is solely aimed at gaining local vote-bank electoral advantages and is not conducive to promoting broader goals of communal harmony.

The MFA emphasized that Sri Lanka urges Canada and its leaders to instead support the country’s efforts in ensuring stability, progress, peace, and reconciliation among all communities within Sri Lanka and among communities of Sri Lankan heritage living overseas.

The statement emphasizes the importance of fostering unity and cooperation among all communities in Sri Lanka for the betterment of the nation as a whole.
