US Ambassador Urges Sri Lankan Legal Community to Uphold Rule of Law and Democracy

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (News Cutter) – Julie Chung, United States Ambassador to Sri Lanka stressed the importance of the legal community in Sri Lanka in ensuring that the rule of law and justice are upheld for everyone in the country.

Addressing the National Law Conference, she highlighted the significance of Local Government (LG) elections, which provide citizens with the opportunity to engage with the government and other organizations through legal representation in an independent judiciary.

The AMB. Chung emphasized that democracy and the rule of law are closely linked and that the legal community plays a crucial role in safeguarding these principles. 

She also reiterated the United States’ unwavering support for Sri Lankans to express their concerns peacefully and participate in their government.

Furthermore, AMB. Chung acknowledged the proud history of free elections in Sri Lanka, which is the foundation of the rights and freedoms enjoyed by its citizens today.
