If the proposed electricity pricing modifications are not implemented, power outages of six to eight hours per day would be imposed beginning next year, according to Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekara.
The minister announced specifically before Parliament that power rates will need to go up in January.
“One unit of power costs Rs 56.90 to produce.” “Rs 420 billion is needed by the Ceylon Electricity Board to cover its expenses,” he stated.
In addition, he said, “The Ceylon Electricity Board owes Rs 40 billion to small-scale power suppliers and Rs 70 billion to private power plants.”
